Sustainable French wood flooring

Forestry policy in France aims to protect the forest heritage as well as the people who work in the industry while promoting sustainable forest management. The large majority of woodlands are owned by private individuals with the remainder belonging to towns and villages. France has an excellent reputation for sustainable forest management going back to the 17th century when French oak was an important component in the production of ships for the naval fleet.

Today French oak is much sought after for solid wood and engineered wood floors as well as for building and landscaping. France has strict laws in place to maintain the biodiversity of the forests while maintaining its reputation for producing the finest quality oak. The French National Forestry Office maintains a 25-30 year cyclical period which sees the production of wood from the time seedlings are planted to being transplanted to sustainable forests and eventually harvested after 25 - 30 years of growth.

Our French flooring suppliers originate from Torce in the region of Brittany in North West France. In ancient times Argoat, the inland part of Brittany, was covered by a vast forest including the forest of Paimpont the location of mythical Brocéliande, the forest of King Arthur.
